Conservative pundits love to posture about the right to privacy & personal freedom & limiting government overreach, but it isn’t about the sanctity of life & it never has been. If it were, there would be sweeping bipartisan support for universal healthcare, affordable housing, food security, public education funding, comprehensive sex education & universal access to childcare, pre-natal care, adoption services, contraceptives & sterilisation. Because those are the proven methods of preventing unwanted pregnancies.
The decision whether or not to have children is personal, private, life-altering, & sometimes life-threatening; it can affect every aspect of your health, finances, family & future. There are countless philosophical arguments concerning when personhood begins & countless moral lines drawn around acceptable & unacceptable reasons to prevent or terminate a pregnancy. But none of those arguments matter, because bodily autonomy is inviolate.
No-one can use your body without your consent, even after you’re dead. No-one can compel access to your blood, bone marrow, body parts, or organs - even to save a life, regardless of whether that life is fully or partially formed - EVEN AFTER YOU'RE DEAD. Attempting to legislate otherwise leaves living, breathing humans (particularly everyone with a uterus) with fewer rights than a corpse.
